Thoughts from the Costume Shop

Many of our costume shop and scene shop employees are seasonal, and aren’t around during the summer when we’re in between seasons.  On Monday, the shop employees came back and we caught up with Emily Kramer in the Costume Shop to see what she was up to in her “free time.”

Q: What were you up to this summer when you weren’t working in the costume shop?
A:This summer, I worked on my first movie as the Assistant Costume Designer…It should
be out in January, we’re hoping to make Sundance. We filmed on location at the bottom of the Appalachian Mountains at an all girls camp that had been there since the 1920’s.  It was absolutely beautiful and such an incredible experience. I learned so much in such a short period of time. The biggest adjustment, for me, between theatre and film is the sequence in which costumes are established. It was a huge adjustment shooting things out of order, but I got used to it pretty fast.

Q: Can you describe what it’s like the first week back?
A: The first week back can vary depending on how large  the opening production is.  But, the first day back is a lot like the first day back at school. Everyone’s excited to see each other and fill everyone in on their summer away from the theatre, eat goodies, look at the calendar, and settle back in to the shop. We start fittings for What I Learned in Paris the week of August 6th so I jump right in to shopping.

Q: What production are you most excited about?
A: I’m probably most excited for What I Learned in Paris. We brought back Costume Designer, Lex Liang, he designed Carapace and Into the Woods. We’ve established a really great working relationship and now I consider him a great friend so I can’t wait for him to arrive!
